Blackberry without blackberry operator

Postby Frederick on Sat Aug 23, 2008 6:15 pm

Hi!

Where I live now I only have two operators that supports Blackberry and I don't want to have any of them. Is there any other way for me to get my e-mail and web in to my Blackberry?

Many thanks in advance!

There is an option to get "pull" email. Try the free email client LogicMail for Blackberry.
Here is an report about the most important details of LogicMail
http://www.blackberryinsight.com/2007/1 ... y-devices/

LogicMail is free as in Free Beer and also free as in Freedom since it is Open Source.
With this program You should be able to pull Your mail onto Your Blackberry device.

The other thing You need is a SIM chip that allows data transfer for the ports in question. Most carriers allow any kind of data transfer, however a few carriers filter their data traffic and only allow some type, for example wap, to access the internet. If a carrier advertises data transfer You cannot be sure what is actually supported. Also asking the sales people in the shop often won't help as they don't have any technical background at all. They will just tell You what is printed on the product.

Rule of thumb: The more expensive it is the better it should work. Enjoy Your Blackberry pull mail :)

OK here is the scoop. Presuming you have a GSM Blackberry you can sign up for a standard PDA data plan with your provider. Enter the TCP settings for that data plan in your Blackberry Options Menu under "Advanced".

Download "Opera Mini" for your web browser as the Blackberry Browser will not be available. Any applications you place on your device will have to be downloaded to your computer and installed thru the Desktop Manager or you can place the "jar" file on a media card in your phone and then "browse" to the file thru the Media Application and then open the file from there and it will install on your device, that is providing it is a compatible application. The Gmail App for Blackberry will work well for email if you use gmail, Flurry mail http://www.flurry.com is a multi-account email application that works very well for just reading and sending email however I do not think you can send attachments with it. Also the afore mentioned Logic Mail will work, however I found it to be pretty "buggy" in the past and it was rather difficult to set up.

Beyond email and web browsing here are a few apps that worked in the past using a standard PDA data plan.

BeeJive-Multi Service IM client (not free but there is a free trial and it's well worth the price if you are a chatter)
Telenav- GPS Navigation software (free Trial)
Viigo-RSS News Reader (free)
Blackberry Maps (free)

I had a Blackberry before my old provider got BB Services and I used standard PDA data as described above. I found that there were alot of things that can still be done with a Blackberry without BIS, it will just be a matter of you downloading and installing applications on a "trial and error" basis to find the right applications for your needs.

Hope this helps.

As Always...
