GPS, Map, Tracking, Waypoints, Geocaching; what do you want?

Postby k on Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:09 am

Hi,

the subject says all. What kind of GPS application do you miss for your BlackBerry?

Considering that there are already a lot of GPS & maps apps available (incl. Google Maps Mobile, TeleNav, BlackBerry Maps, MobileTracker, Spot, GPSed, amAze GPS, and even more - there is still a lot of space for more apps and service related to GPS which we can and want to use on our BlackBerry. We just don't know about that yet ... :)

So come on! Tell us what you think! :ugeek:

Well, as I mentioned in other post, TreckBuddy is a great piece.
To use it with maps, you will need Googleak software that downloads map tiles of the selected area (Google, Yahoo, VEarth) to your HD and converts it to TreckBuddy-friendly format. All you need after this is to copy that maps onto mini-SD card, configure and run TB!

Oh Yeah! I forgot to mention that I was looking for the piece of software that will not use my data traffic. All others, even subscription-free Google Maps for Mobile DOES USE your data traffic to download maps. TreckBuddy does not require connection to you service provider, you just need to define area and required zoom level in Googleak prior to downloading maps onto your PC.

Do you have link for Googleak?

Btw: this is highly illegal (technically) as it alters copyrighted map material ... but from the scientific aspect it seems to be a nice idea :)

Well, legal issues had been heavily discussed on the relevant threads, where Googleak lives...
The usage terms for Google maps are quiet vague, and as long as it is for personal use, you can download maps. The program does not really alter these maps, it just dissects them onto tiles of the size required for TreckBuddy

Google policy is simple:
If You use and alter their maps to create some beautiful software, they will give You praise for being so creative.
Once You make serious money with it they will sue You.

Spot (http://www.skylab-mobilesystems.com/en/ ... /spot.html) does not need an internet connection either. It is possible to use offline maps, although the configuration is not that easy.

That's also what I experienced. I heard some rumors about a new app they are preparing for such "offline purposes". Does anyone know more about this?
