(Disclaimer: Palm user since April 1997, BB user since April 2008)

I would prefer not to carry both a Palm and a Blackberry, but...

- There are things my Palm can do that the BB can't, and vice versa. Seems like there's more Palm software out there than BB software, much of which is free. There is some good free software for BB, but much of the freeware seems like spare time projects for people who aren't that good programming Java. (I am not a programmer, and do not play one on TV.)

- The Palm doesn't crash as often as the BB, and I have never been told to 'wipe out the [BB's] operating system and reinstall it' to fix a problem. This seems to be T-Mobile BB support's favorite answer to any question/problem not on their script (Their second favorite line is "You have to reboot it every day". Huh? I don't even reboot crummy old Windows machines on a daily basis...go figure.) You can't wipe/reinstall Palm OS without special software to read and write to the flash memory in older models - you can't do that with the current ones AFAIK.

- I miss the Palm's touch screen, I miss Graffiti (the original Graffiti, although Graffiti II can be fixed with a utility). Thumb-typing is OK, but I can Graffiti faster than I can thumb-type.

- The BB's WiFi implementation is far superior to that of Palm OS 5. I'm not much of a fan of the BB's mandatory, expensive, proprietary server-based data plan, but that is unavoidable. Without having to go through RIM's servers, the data plans would be a lot cheaper.

- The native browsers and email are about the same for both Palm and BB...they can stand a good deal of improvement.

Palm lost big, but it was self-inflicted. Splitting the company into a hardware division and an OS division was their first downfall. Selling Palm OS off to an overseas company, then later buying it back, made matters worse.

Announcing--but not having--

1) an overall OS upgrade;
2) an OS upgrade path for existing users;
3) any really new products (sorry, Centro doesn't count, and Foleo had the plug pulled)

with Palm OS 6 at the consumer level in ~5 years seems to me to be Palm's real kiss of death.

Palm OS 6 might show up 4Q 2008, then again, it might not. Anyone know Bono? Ask him to pour a few $million more into Palm to get them moving again.

In the meantime, I'll be using both.

They are announcing Palm 6 for 8 years or so. Nothing have been released until now. I hope they gonna bring something really nice soon. So it could be at least a bit competitive to the BB OS :)

First, the geek in me thinks it's way cool that someone named "cassioppeia" is asking about handheld computers. My first, uh, PDA/mobile was a first generation Casio "Cassioppeia" running WindowsCE 1.0.

Any-hoo...

I've been a Palm user since 1999 (Palm IIIx) when I dumped my Windows CE device. Since then, I've had a IIIxe, Sony Clie 610, Sony Clie NX73, and Sony Clie TH-55. (Something makes me think I may have had something else in there...)

I went Blackberry about a year ago.

In many ways, I miss my Palm device. I had great software on it, for which there is yet a replacement with the Blackberry.

I miss the touch screen. A little.

I miss the fact that I had a 1GB memory card that I was able to use to actually store software and data... effectively giving me a device with over 1GB of RAM.

I miss the large screen size (resolution) of the NX73 and TH55. I could fit twice as much on a single screen as I can with my BB.

I miss the speed of startup, even after a "safety pin" reset ("battery pull" in the BB world). Now, I wait a couple of minutes for my BB to start. Then, it was like 15 or 20 seconds max.

I miss the ease and speed of sync. BB sync with DM seems much slower. And more error prone.

I miss the fact that I could backup 100% what was on the device with one program. I've yet to figure out how to get a complete backup of every piece of software, OS code, and database on my BB.

I miss the fact that I could browse the file system on my Palm device, seeing (and manipulating if I wanted) every single program, OS file, and database. I've yet to figure out what "files" are on my BB and where all my memory went. On the Palm, I could easily tell where every byte was going and, if I wanted, remove or copy off files.

Yes, I miss my Clie.

What I do like is that I now have integration with my phone. I carry my BB everywhere. With my Clie, I tended to leave it in my bag or on my desk much of the time. And, at home, it never came out.

What I do like is that I have a keyboard. The NX73's keyboard was hard to use and gave me a huge and heavy device.

What I do like is that I have data access. With my Palm devices, I had no data access. With the NX73, I had to plug-in a seperate WiFi card. With the TH55, it had built-in WiFi, but it never really worked well. And it only worked at home. My BB gets data access even in the subway, on the highway, everywhere.

What I do like is that I get push mail. And RSS feeds.

What I do like is the small size and light weight on my 8830. At least as compared to the already reasonable thin and small TH55.

For me, if I could take my TH55, add in a slide-out keyboard, add in the phone/EVDO data, and have e-mail service... with no more weight or size than my 8830, I'd have a great device. In other words, I much prefer the Palm OS (even though it's very dated) and the third party software. And I really want to bigger screen back.
